Lake Nacimiento is buzzing with excitement as the 4th of July holiday offers a weekend of festivities!  Families and friends are meeting up in their Oak Shores or Heritage Ranch homes in anticipation of a relaxing weekend filled with great food, time outdoors on Lake Nacimiento and an abundance of fun things to do!

If you are wondering what’s going on around Lake Nacimiento to celebrate the 4th, you won’t want to miss the annual Oak Shores 4th of July Weekend Pancake Breakfast!  This is a fun time to gather with your Lake Nacimiento neighbors and share in a good old fashioned breakfast!  Here are the details:

When: July 2- 8:30-10am (or until the food runs out)

Where: The Oak Shores Clubhouse

- Come join in this community breakfast where pancakes are in abundance!  Mimosa’s and Bloody Mary’s will also be available for purchase.  This is a great way to get to know your neighbors, spend time with family and friends, and get geared up for a day out on Lake Nacimiento!

Summer on Lake Nacimiento is a great time of year, and with the upcoming 4th of July celebration; you’ll noticean abundance of people enjoying the lake!  This coming weekend, Lake Nacimiento will be lively with boating, skiing, swimming and those just wanting to hang out on the shores of Lake Nacimiento.  If you’ve been a resident of Oak Shores or Heritage Ranch for a few years, you’ve experienced this fun-filled weekend that draws many to Lake Nacimiento.

While getting together with family and friends is an ideal way to take in the 4th of July festivities on Lake Nacimiento; lake safety still needs to be on the top of our list!  Here are 10 lake safety tips that you’ll want to review before the busy 4th of July weekend begins!

10 Lake Safety Tips:

1. Supervision – Never turn your back on your child around water. It takes just seconds for a child to be in serious trouble. If you have children swimming in Lake Nacimiento; it’s important to have at least one adult watching them at all times. Segment the supervision responsibilities so there are never questions about which adult is “on duty”.

2.  Bright Colors – Dress your child in bright colors when going to the lake or a more crowded area around Lake Nacimiento. Use a bright color so all family members have a consistent image of what the child is wearing.

3.  Pictures – When venturing out to any of the activities on or around Lake Nacimiento; make sure you have a recent picture of each child in your group.  This way, if one of the children wanders off, you have a reference to show people when asking about the child.

4.  Cell Phones – Your cell phone is VERY important. You may want to protect it from the water by putting it in plastic bag, but make sure you always have it on you and completely charged.

5.  Survival Swimming – Before the children begin swimming in Lake Nacimiento, be sure to go over the basic survival tips in case they were to go unnoticed in the lake and need help.  Go through treading water techniques and a system of signaling for help if they find themselves in trouble. It may be a good idea to attach a whistle to a bracelet for each child to wear in the water. Self-Rescue swimming is an added layer of protection.

6.  Dock Safety – Have a hook, rope and throw ring attached to the dock that can be used at a moments notice. Teach and practice their use and make sure each child understand the importance of using them only in times of emergency and not as a toy.

7.  Rope off a wading/swimming area – Begin at the shore and extend a rope out to a depth of your choice. Allow your children to swim off of the shore ONLY in this area. It reduces where you might have to search, and provides a safe limit that makes everyone more comfortable.

8.  Go no further line – Paint a ‘go no further line’ 2.5 feet in from all edges of the dock. Teach young children to hold an adult’s hand between that line and the edge of the dock.

9.  Life Jackets – Life jackets must be worn in a boat at all times and around the water for children who don’t know how to swim. However, life jackets are not a substitute for adult supervision. When picking out a life jacket, please read the warning labels as some of them will not float a child face-up, and make sure the life jacket fits the child well.

10.  Floaties – Flotation devices such as floaties, inflatable rings, etc., can often times provide a false sense of security for parents and children. These items can easily deflate or fall off your child’s arm leaving them in a potentially dangerous situation.  While these are fun to play with and use, make sure you’re still taking every precaution for safety by watching your child.

I hope these tips will be a great refresher for you as you think about spending time out on Lake Nacimiento this 4th of July weekend and the rest of the summer!  It’s easy to get distracted with all the festivities and people around, but safety still needs to remain a number one priority!  We all want to enjoy a safe and happy summer on our favorite lake!

Summer on Lake Nacimiento is a lively time of year with endless outdoor activities and opportunities to get involved inthe Oak Shores or Heritage Ranch communities.  Whether you enjoy boating, hiking, skiing, lounging on your boat or taking in the stunning lake views from your lakefront home; summer is all about enjoying Lake Nacimiento’s natural setting.

If you’re one who enjoys a long day outdoors soaking in the sun and water; you may want to take a break from the heat and come home to a cool air conditioned home on Lake Nacimiento.  And, while the cool may be refreshing, running your air conditioner all summer is not ideal for your utility bill, or the environment.

So, how can you keep cool while still being environmentally conscious in your Oak Shores or Heritage Ranch home?  Below are 6 ways to beat the heat this summer as pointed out by thedailygreen.com.  By following these six simple tips, you’ll notice a significant savings in your energy bill and will help keep Lake Nacimiento an eco-friendly environment.

1. Close your windows- It may seem counterintuitive, but opening the windows will often make your Lake Nacimiento home warmer, not cooler. Open your windows at night if the air outside is cooler than inside, and close them – along with blinds and shades – before the sun hits your house in the morning. When night falls, open windows wide, particularly those oriented toward prevailing winds so you can take advantage of cross ventilation. You may also put houseplants – particularly larger potted trees – in front of sunny windows to absorb some of the sun’s energy.

2. Use fans strategically- Using ceiling fans or stand alone fans can create a nice breeze in a room and help keep you cool.  If you’re using ceiling fans, make sure it’s running in the right direction, so that in the summer the breeze is blowing down, not up.  Remember to turn fans off when you leave a room since they are made to keep people cool, and are not made to cool an entire room. If you’re buying a new fan, buy an Energy Star fan which will use 50% less energy than other models!

3. Cook (or don’t) a cool meal- Just as drinking an ice cold lemonade cools your body, eating cold food helps keep your internal temperature lower on a hot day. One great option: Watermelon and Cherry Salad with Fresh Mint Syrup.  If you do cook, use the grill or the microwave, or else you’ll heat up your kitchen from using the oven and stove. And remember, kitchen appliances aren’t the only devices that give off heat; limiting your use of electronics will help keep your spaces cooler.

4. Shut off the lights- While modern lightning, like compact fluorescents and LEDs, are more efficient, incandescent light bulbs can produce as much heat as they do light. Energy Star-rated light bulbs produce 75% less heat, so consider that when replacing bulbs. It’s always a good idea to shut off lights to save energy, it makes a big difference on hot sunny summer days.

5. Go for a swim or take a cold shower- It may sound obvious, but it’s worth saying: If you’re hot, cool it off by immersing yourself in cold water. Jumping in Lake Nacimiento is always refreshing as it will immediately cool down your core body temperature.  If you’re back home after a day on the lake and still can’t seem to cool down, a cold rinse off in the shower should do the trick!

6. Plant a tree (or two or three) strategically- Your Oak Shores or Heritage Ranch house may get hot because the sun beats down on it relentless on hot summer days. Let nature help reduce your energy bills by planting deciduous trees on the east and west sides of your home; in the summer, their broad leaves will shade your house.  Also consider planting trees or shrubs to shade high-heat areas – air conditioning units that emit heat, for instance, and driveways and walkways that absorb it.

Notice of Default filings fell in May 2011 with a 4.0 percent drop resulting in the fewest foreclosure starts since October 2008 when SB 1137 resulted in a temporary halt in the Notice of Default process. More foreclosures were scheduled for sale at the courthouse steps in May with Notice of Trustee Sale filings up 16.6 percent from April, the first month-over-month increase this year. Notice of Trustee sales remain down year-over-year off by 9.0 percent. Cancellations of foreclosure sales dropped 24.3 percent compared to April after jumping 27.0 percent from March. Foreclosure sales on the courthouse steps were up from the prior month, with 3.4 percent more sales Back to Bank and a 4.1 percent increase in foreclosed properties Sold to 3rd Parties. The average Time to Foreclose continued a steady climb, increasing 10.3 percent to a new record of 344 days. Third parties are reselling inventory more quickly, with the Time to Resell down 7.6 percent month-over-month to 134 days, the fewest number of days since September 2010 — likely due in part to a lack of inventory throughout much of California.

One of the reasons many flock to Lake Nacimiento each year is for the great fishing.  If you’re a fishing enthusiast and haven’t ventured to Lake Nacimiento; you should!  You’ll find this large lake has brought about some of the greatest fishing tales and continues to be a fishing hot spot!

In fact, Lake Nacimiento is home to a summer series of night Bass tournaments!  Alternating with Lake San Antonio, these night tournaments will be taking place all summer and is a great opportunity for experienced fisherman to enjoy time out on the lake.  The next tournament takes place Friday, June 17 at San Antonio Lake and will be back at Lake Nacimiento on July 15 and September 9.

Heritage Ranch resident, Dave Rymal, has been actively involved in this great tournament.  This past Tuesday, Dave caught and released between 40 and 50 bluegill from where his pontoon was docked and noted that, “The white bass bite was hot on Tuesday.”  Martin Rowley, also a resident of Heritage Ranch, has had success in the tournament and caught white bass and a few spots trolling chartreuse Roostertails.

Lake Nacimiento is the only lake in California that’s stocked with white bass!  You can catch white bass any time of the year, but spring and fall seem to be the best time for catching this type of fish.  The best place to look for white bass on Lake Nacimiento is in the main channel of the lake between Lake Nacimiento Marina and Bee Rock, Los Tablas, Oak Shores and the narrows.  Lake Nacimiento is also stocked with largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish.  It’s a fisherman’s paradise!
